How do we stereotype people from Central Asia and the Middle East?
People are not defined by where they are from. When you say Middle East and then Central Asia, your mind thinks that they are in two very different locations. However, the Middle East and Central Asia border one another. Their connection is the perimeter shared by Iran, Turkmenistan, and Afghanistan.
So, really are these two groups of people really that different? However we treat them differently, when they have the same religion and similar cultures. It could be compared to trying to distinguish the East from the West Coast of the United States.
Taken from the results of our school wide survey, our students have a hard time distinguishing between the two regions of the United States. Why do our students not know? Throughout my time at Menifee County High School, World Cultures has been my only class to teach me how to be more globally aware.
Also on our survey, we gave an example picture of people from the Middle East in a village and 40% of our students felt either uncomfortable or a little uncomfortable. Why? Is this still the after effects of 9/11? What are these stereotypes based on?

CNN recently did a study based upon terrorist attacks based on religion and culture. The group that executed the most attacks were Latinos, guess how many were Islamic extremist? 6%. Jews carried out more then Muslims at 7%. Every day people are stereotyping an entire religious group because only a fraction are extremist. Since 9/11 there have been more then 300 deaths caused by terroristic violence, out of all of those only 33 were carried out by Muslims. Since 9/11 there have been over 180,000 murders committed and the islamic terrorism totals to less then one percent. The START Global Terrorism Database spans between the years 1970 and 2012 there were approximately 2,400 acts of terrorism on US soil about 60 were carried out by muslim extremist. That is ONLY 2.5%.
